How to Care for Your Sew-In Weave & Protect Your Natural Hair

September 25, 20252 min read

Sew-in extensions can be beautiful while still supporting healthy hair care.

A beautiful sew-in should do more than look good, it should allow you to maintain the health of your natural hair underneath.

Keep Your Scalp Clean

Don’t assume that wearing a weave means your scalp no longer needs attention. Your scalp can still accumulate perspiration, natural oils and styling-product buildup.

Use a gentle cleansing routine appropriate for your hair and scalp, making sure the scalp and braids underneath are properly cleaned.

After cleansing, one of the most important steps is allowing the hair underneath your installation to dry thoroughly.

Protect Your Edges

Your hairline contains some of your most delicate strands.

Avoid excessive pulling, heavy extensions and repeatedly applying tension to the same areas. If your installation hurts, causes persistent tenderness or gives you a headache, don’t simply “wait for it to loosen.”

The American Academy of Dermatology advises that pain from an extension style can be a warning that it is too tight. Repeated tension can contribute to traction alopecia and, if allowed to progress, potentially permanent hair loss.

Wrap Your Hair at Night

Before bed:

  • Gently detangle your extensions.

  • Secure longer hair loosely.

  • Cover your hair with a satin or silk bonnet or scarf.

  • Consider a satin or silk pillowcase for additional protection.

The goal is to reduce friction and unnecessary tangling while you sleep.

Don’t Overdo the Heat

Your extensions may be gorgeous curled or bone-straight, but daily high heat isn’t necessary.

Use heat conservatively and follow the care recommendations for your particular extension hair.

Keep Your Maintenance Appointments

A professional maintenance schedule allows your stylist to examine the installation, your scalp and your natural hair.

Extensions should never become a substitute for caring for the hair underneath them.

A flawless install begins with healthy hair, and maintaining healthy hair should remain part of your beauty routine.
